A trip to the moon: 1969

Have you been to the moon lately? This is a question your grandchildren might ask their friends. One hundred years from now. A trip to the moon might be as common as a trip to the moon might be as common as a trip to the next state.

On July 20, 1969. The dream to land on the moon become a reality. Astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped out of the Apollo 11 spacecraft’s lunar module and walked on the moon’s rocky surface for 18 minutes. A television camera on the module permitted people from all over the earth to see a human’s first step on the moon. Everyone heard Armstrong say, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

Astronaut Edwin Aldrin joined Armstrong for another 2 1\2 hours. A third astronaut, Michael Collins, stayed in the spacecraft. Armstrong and Aldrin collected rocks and soil samples and set up instruments to record vibrations caused by moon quakes. They also placed an American flag on the moon. Then their lunar module took them back to the orbiting spacecraft, and they returned to the earth at the speed of 25,000 miles an hour.

The three astronauts couldn’t eat regular food; they had to eat dehydrated (dried) food which didn’t need refrigeration. And there were on the imaginary spaceship described by Jules Verne. But this was not science fiction. This was the real thing! It was indeed, “one giant leap “for the hurnan race.
